OVERVIEW

Marko earned his law degree from the University of Alberta, where he received the Student Legal Services of Edmonton Distinguished Service Award in 2023. His three years of involvement with Student Legal Services, including a term in executive leadership, reflected his commitment to advocacy and community service.

In his early years of practice, Marko worked across family, civil, and personal injury litigation, while also supporting corporate transactions, employment negotiations, and real estate matters. He has drafted commercial service agreements, land leases, employment contracts, bylaws, and policies, as well as wills, enduring powers of attorney, and personal directives. This breadth of solicitor experience has positioned him well within GFS Law’s real estate, corporate/commercial, and estate planning practices.

Marko’s calm demeanor and collaborative approach inspire confidence among clients and colleagues. He values open discussion and teamwork, ensuring that everyone’s perspective is heard. With clients, he focuses on clear, empathetic communication, explaining each stage of a matter, identifying which concerns can be put to rest, and managing expectations with realism and care.

Born in Germany to a family of refugees from the former Yugoslavia, Marko immigrated to Canada at age four—an experience that shaped his outlook on resilience and adaptability. Outside of work, he brings that same balance and curiosity to his personal pursuits, from skiing, pickleball, and golf to exploring Japanese culture through sushi and travel. Marko also enjoys the social and collaborative aspects of Dungeons & Dragons, recognizing how the game mirrors his professional skills in strategy and communication. In both settings, he anticipates how others might respond, adapts quickly to new developments, and thinks on his feet without losing focus or flow.

We acknowledge that what we call Alberta is the traditional and ancestral territory of many peoples, presently subject to Treaties 6, 7, and 8. Namely: the Blackfoot Confederacy – Kainai, Piikani, and Siksika – the Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stoney Nakoda, and the Tsuu T’ina Nation and the Métis People of Alberta. This includes the Métis Settlements and the Six Regions of the Métis Nation of Alberta within the historical Northwest Metis Homeland. We acknowledge the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have lived in and cared for these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or are visiting.
